EV charging adapters: types and applications

There are several classifications of chargers for electric vehicles: American and European. Depending on the capacity of the charging station, standardized charging cables with adapters are used. Some of the most common are American Type 1 (J1772), European Type 2 (Mennekes) and CCS, Japanese CHAdeMO. Charging cable Type 1 (J1772)

Type 1 Plug (J1772)

The Type 1 for ev is a single-phase plug that provides charging power up to 7.4 kW (230V, 32A) and is designed to connect the electric vehicle to public charging stations to transfer charge to the ev. Each charging station has a charge controller and all types of protection: emergency shutdown, current leakage, etc. Thus, the process of ev charging using a Type 1 charging cable (J1772) is reliable, fast and at the same time absolutely safe. The cable for charging the electric car has a large margin of performance, and practically does not heat up during charging.

Electric car adapters Type 1 suitable for: Nissan Leaf, Nissan NV200 SE Van, Chevrolet Volt, Ford Focus Electric, Ford C-Max Energi, Ford Fusion Energi, BMW I3, Renault Zoe, Renault Fluence ZE, Toyota Prius, Smart, Tesla (with special adapter) , Kia Soul EV, Citroen C-zero, Fisker Karma, Mitsubishi I-Miev, Mitsubishi Outlander Phev.

This standard is used mainly in American models and cars from the Asian region and quite rarely in Europe

Type 2 Plug (Mennekes)

The CHAdeMO (or Type 4) charging cable is a Japanese standard and is used for ev charging with direct current (fast charger).

The CHAdeMO European equivalent - is CCS, which supports AC and DC charging (AC and DC).

These two standards have possible powers of 20, 44, 50 kW, the maximum power is 100 kW.

The following manufacturers offer electric cars which are compatible with the CHAdeMO plug: BD Otomotive, Citroën, Honda, Kia, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Subaru, Tesla (with adaptor) and Toyota.

Tesla Supercharger

Tesla uses a modified version of the type 2 Mennekes plug as ev chargers. This allows for the Model S to recharge to 80% within 30 minutes. Tesla offers charging to its ev owners for free. By the way, it has not been possible for other ev models to be charged with Tesla superchargers.

For the ev driver`s convenience, each charging point`s marked with the adapter type on the map of electric charging points in Ukraine.

In the UGV Chargers mobile app, all charging stations are marked with the used connector type
